The 2nd year of the Level 3 Media course predominately focuses on Film Production.  The broadcast projects of the 1st year successfully build the skills, knowledge and professionalism required to design and produce the high quality films expected in the 2nd year.  By not rushing into film production in the 1st year, work produced in the 2nd year is support by year of professional development, skills building and theoretical study.

Note:  The course content for the 2018-19 academic year is subject to change.

Royal Shakespeare Company Trailer Project (September 2017)

The 2nd year begins with  an advertising project, involving the design and production of a trailer for a theatre play.  The project is supported by the RSC, who describe to students their own production processes for designing and making promotional films.  They explain that theatre trailers are produced long before the performance begins, meaning that film makers do not have access to the the stage, props or actors.  The trailers must therefore be conceptual, using creative visuals and narratives to promote the play’s content in a manner that appeals to the target audiences.  This project really challenges the student's approach to film making, demanding creative imagery, experimentation and an ability to think conceptually.

Music Video (September 2017)

The music video assignment runs alongside the RSC project, testing the management skills of our students as they coordinate and deliver the production of two projects running simultaneously.  The RSC project is heavily influenced by the client, so the music video assignment offers a more independent approach to idea develop, content and production.  It is recommended that students find their own artists to act as a client, but this is not mandatory and students are free to design and create the music video that they personally want to produce in order to express their skills and ambitions as film makers.

Final Major Project (FMP) (February 2018)

The FMP is a final demonstration of the media skills that have been developed during the two year course and determines the students' Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.  The Media students develop their own assignment brief for the FMP, informing lecturers of the type of film they want to make and how they intend to research and plan their idea.  The variety of films produced include documentaries, short films, TV shows, music videos and advertisements.
